Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. According to tradition, in 1445 a woman of Olney heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to the church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan. On the 14th, 15th and 16th of February, EB1 Espadanal and EB/JI Ribeiros also celebrated Pancake Day by eating delicious pancakes and taking part in pancake races. The students had lots of fun together!

Pancake Day, ou Shrove Tuesday, é o tradicional dia de festa antes do início da Quaresma na quarta-feira de Cinzas. Os cristãos anglo-saxões confessavam-se e eram “absolvidos” (absolvidos dos seus pecados). Um sino tocava para chamar as pessoas à confissão. Segundo a tradição, em 1445, uma mulher de Olney ouviu o sino tocar enquanto fazia panquecas e correu para a igreja de avental, segurando ainda a frigideira. Nos dias 14, 15 e 16 de Fevereiro, a EB1 Espadanal e a EB/JI Ribeiros também celebraram o Dia da Panqueca comendo deliciosas panquecas e participando em corridas de panquecas. Os alunos divertiram-se muito!
